“GOD SENT ME AN ANGEL”

On April 18, 2010 Joanne Caras will be speaking at B’nai Israel Synagogue in Rockville, Maryland at 9:30 a.m. about her work helping the soup kitchen in Jerusalem with funds she has raised by editing and selling The Holocaust Survivor Cookbook. I will be there to meet and hear her speak about this wonderful book and the marvelous work she is doing.  Hope to see you there too.

Rabbi Yehuda Azrad runs the Carmei Ha’ir Soup Kitchen in Jerusalem, feeding as many as 500 poor Israelis every day. Totally dependent on contributions, the Soup Kitchen came very close to shutting down due to the world economic crisis.

“I wasn’t sure how we could keep our doors open.” Yehuda said, “but then God sent me an angel named Joanne!”

On January 10, 2010 Joanne Caras and her family came to Carmei Ha’ir carrying a check that brought their total contributions to $100,000.

“My family is donating all of the profits from the sale of the Holocaust Survivor Cookbook to Carmei Ha’ir” Joanne said at the ceremony marking this latest donation.

The Holocaust Survivor Cookbook is a compilation of 129 miraculous stories of survival from Holocaust Survivors all over the world.  It also contains over 250 kosher recipes and photos of the survivors during the war and more recently with their families today.

“The cookbook has allowed the circle of life to be completed for many of our contributors,” Joanne explained. “While they starved in concentration camps or in hiding, their stories will allow us now over 60 years later to help feed hungry people in Israel.”

The cookbook is sold for $36.00.  Groups can purchase large quantities at the wholesale price of $21.00 and use it as a fundraiser.

“In total we have raised over $400,000 for groups that have purchased our cookbook as a fundraiser,” Joanne said. “This brings the grand total raised from this amazing cookbook to over half a million dollars!”

“We are now collecting stories and recipes for the second volume of the cookbook’” she added.  “Anyone who would like to honor a Survivor by including their story, photos, and recipes in the next volume can do so by visiting our website.”
